Introduction This document provides details on IOS AP Join Failures seen with both AireOS and C Wireless LAN Controllers WLCs tracked by CSCwd due to Access Point AP Image Signing Validation Failure. Problem IOS APs when are upgraded or downgraded either from or AirOS WLC will get stuck in an image download loop and thereby fail to join WLC AireOS or C due to failure to validate image signing after December 4th, Root Cause The Image Signing Certificates bundled in the AP IOS images were issued on December 4th, , and expired on Dec 4, The certificate SN: XX has expired.

X Total AP's Downloading for each configured NTP server 2. Change date on WLC to something before 4th December Fri Dec 2 C show clock Wait for the APs to come up in Registered state with new image. But please be sure to wait atleast 30 minutes to allow AP to join back before rebooting APs 5. Setup a staging WLC vWLC or CL also works with the same code version as production WLC. Revert time on the staging WLC and join AP to the staging WLC. Once AP downloads code and moves to Registered state on staging WLC show ap summary, move AP to production WLC. Is Cisco going to provide a fix? Yes, currently Cisco is working on a set of AireOS and IOS-XE version APSP , that will include fix for this issue. The new images will allow current APs to update to newer versions push newer certificates to current APs and will allow AP to upgrade successfully. All future releases will include fix for this issue Do I need to change time to install the fixed version?

No, this issue is only impacting the image validation process done as part of the image upgrade. It will not cause problems during normal operations What happens if I add new AP? If the new AP is running the same version as the controller, the AP should join without problems On the other hand, if the version is not matching, the AP will try to download the corresponding image. If the code at the controller, does not have the fixed AP bundled images, this will cause the AP to fail upgrade as described, and the workaround would be necessary If the controller has been upgraded to one of the fixed versions, new Aps can be added normally, and complete upgrade process What will happen for units received from RMA?

This is equivalent to adding new AP. Also, iIf you are running controller version with the AP image fix, they will join and upgrade normally. Otherwise, apply the time workaround Do I need to keep the time modified for operation? No, once the AP have completed the upgrade process, you can put back correct time in the controller, and re-enable NTP What is Cisco doing to prevent this problem again? We are completing a full audit across all Enterprise products, to identify any similar problem that could have been undetected, and implement corrective actions Additionally, changes have been applied to IOS AP image bundle process, to correct this problem Why Cisco did not detect this problem?
